For those of you that do not know much about Mail Order may ask a question like this: what is mail order and how does one get into it? Mail order is any business activity done through mail, whether buying, selling, promoting, advertising, or merchandising.

It is, in fact, any action where the mail is used either directly or indirectly, to obtain a variety of objectives which ultimately lead to the sale of merchandise or services. Indeed, mail order can put you in millions, but you have to get to work for it, identifying the obstacles to success and remove them.

Joseph Cossman, the Mail Order Millionaire says in his book, how I made $1,000,000 from Mail Order that knowledge coupled with confidence and perseverance are the basic thing that will help anybody that is interested in mail order to succeed.

By knowledge, Cossman meant that the intending mail order entrepreneur must have the knowledge of the unique product or services to sell. This special information will breed the confidence in the entrepreneur; this together with patience and dogged determination will help in achieving this goal.

It then becomes a big problem if the mail order man fails to discover a unique product that is going to satisfy a need. He does not have to produce it; he can get it directly from the producer.

I can say that anything can sell by mail order and anything cannot sell by the concept provided the “anything” is unique, it will sell, if not, failure is likely. Again, even if you have a unique product and fail to exude the necessary enthusiasm and confidence, you may fail.

For instance, I will find it difficult to convince anybody to buy the product that I do not use myself or that I am not keen about. Now, you may be confident about your unique product or service but what happen if your effort is not being rewarded with enquires and or orders. 

You need to wait and wait trying your hands on different strategies in the process of waiting. If you are not persevering but want to make money after six months or one year into mail order, you might be disappointed.

Another factor that can result into failure in mail order is poorly designed advert. If your advert is not pooling - that is (getting you results), it may be that, it is poorly written. If you have problem designing your advert copy, contract an expert or freelance copywriter to do the job for you.

A critical condition necessary for the success of the mail order business is efficient postal system. If the postal system is malfunctioning, it will constitute a big obstacle to succeed in the business.

In a situation where by your postal system is not doing well, a way out for you is to make use of alternatives. In mail order, the post is not the only medium of selling. You can make use of courier companies or house delivery system depending on the uniqueness of your product and the volume your clients are buying.

Using the wrong medium can stand between you and success in mail order. If your target audience can be reached through a monthly magazine and you decided to place advert in the daily news-papers with just one day lifespan, you will certainly not reach them and will be addressing the wrong audience if you continue to use such medium.

Finally, failure to be careful with your clients can land you in a hot soup. Don’t be too carried away with the enthusiasm of prospects in your products or services. Ensure that the cheques are clear in the bank or your bank accounts has been credited before you dispatch the good to the client or part of it if you have entered into an agreement with the client to pay in installment.
