Eccentric Writing Habits of Famous Writers [INFOGRAPH]

#Writer’s life

Hi there,
Last Sunday was a career week in our junior church. A day like this, we bring professionals in various field of study to come and talk to the children about different careers. So last Sunday, I felt like talking to them about writing. Nevertheless, I took the children on a topic; Creative Writing as a career path.

After the presentation, one of my teenagers Emmanuel Fasuyi asked me why some writers are fun of using big words in their writing. For instance, he mentioned the word…flabbergasted. According to him, he felt somehow as if when a writer uses big words make him  more superior than others like him, who use simple words while writing.

The guy opined that  since writing is all about passing information to people or the readers, writers should use simple words in passing their message across. That if a writer is using big words; many readers will not understand the meaning of big words being used by writers.

Responding to this, I told him that every writer has his own style of writing. In other words, every writer has the license to write in a manner he feels like writing or suite him. I cited example of two Nigerian’s writers using Prof. Wole Soyinka and Prof. Chinua Achebe. I highlighted  the styles of their writing.

For example, Prof. Wole Soyinka is known in the realm of literature for using big words in all his literary works. Though I adore Prof. Soyinka, because he is the only Nigerian's writer that romanticize  the three genres of literature, but his readers will have to keep a dictionary near them to look for the meaning of some words while reading.  For  Prof. Chinua Achebe, his simplicity in the choice of words in his literary work makes many readers to enjoy and like his works.
Irrespective of how a writer choose the style of writings, we don't have to criticize him  for that because he has every right to write what he want to write, how he want to write it, and to the people he want to pass the message to. It's the writer's life!

So, in today’s post, I will like to share with you the fascinating working habits of 18 famous writers shown in the  infograph below. These literary icons profiled below had very specific ideas about what writing utensils they could use, what hours of the day they would write, what rooms they would write in, what they would wear while writing, and even what they wanted their writing spaces to smell like.

Great writing comes from the freedom to create without judgment in an environment that sparks creativity and fosters a feeling of security, and if that means churning away in your underwear or scribbling your genius in purple crayon, go for it!
