Recently, the Nigerian’s Daily Newspapers have been filled with
stories of increasing wave of sexual molestation of young girls in our society
especially the minors. This crime has
made a lot the victims to experience various psychological problems in their
lives, and those who can’t handle it ended up committing suicide.
A case of 15- year- old girl, Comfort Uche-Ume from Isieke Community
in Umuahia North Local Government of Abia State, Nigeria, who committed suicide
after she was ganged- rape by four boys is still fresh. According to Punch,
the deceased was JSS3 STUDENT, who just
finished her “Junior WACE” examination.
However, many parents have shown their displeasure
over how this monster-crime has been continued to perpetuate against their daughters
unabatedly by the opposite sex, and sometimes by old men, who are old enough to
be the girl’s father. Bad enough, in some cases, fathers became the main
culprits- rapists.
Investigations reveal that cases of rape have been reported in the
Police Station day in, day out, while many others cases have not been reported
to avoid stigmatization by the public, who may think that such a girl is
wayward.
To make the matter worst, the way the rape cases are being handled
by Nigerian Police in one side and in the other side by families of the victim
and the rapist has left much to be desired. The culprit will walk freely in the
same environment without being arrested, while the victim will be groaning with
pangs of pain.
It was against this ugly situation that made Lagos State
Government to champion a course against child’s molestation of any kind. A bill
was passed to make a law that will deal decisively with the offenders of rape by jail
terms. Evidently, this has paid off.
Today, Vanguard reported that an Ikeja
Magistrates’ Court today sentenced a 25 year old unemployed man named Ogboru
Godspower, to 14 years in jail for defiling a 13-year-old daughter of his
neighbour in Ikorodu, Lagos State in Nigeria.
The prosecutor, Jimah Iseghede, told the court that the grave
offence was committed on Aug. 8 at the rapist's residence. The young girl was
going to take her bath when the accused waylaid her, removed her towel &
defiled her according to a report.
A neighbour who saw the accused in the act quickly alerted other
neighbours and he was arrested.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr
Tajudeen Elias, sentenced the rapist after he pleaded guilty to the offence. He
said, 'The accused is hereby sentenced to 14 years imprisonment to serve as
deterrent to others and to reform him to be a law abiding citizen.'
This sexual molestation of young children is becoming too much. Yours
KEB is advising Parents to be more vigilant so that their young girls will not be a
victim.
