3 Marketing Ideas You Can Steal From Bruce Lee
Could you believe that Hollywood can make your
business better? You’ve seen a lot of movies and you’ve probably heard enough
about Will Smith, George Lucas or Jackie Chan, but how those crazy guys can improve
your marketing? I’ll get into that later…
But first, let me introduce you to one of the most
effective branches of marketing – attraction marketing – in which people are
automatically joining your business opportunity, contracting your services, or
buying your products because of who you are.
And I’m not talking about branding, I mean
something deeper than just a brand.
I mean that people are willing to buy from you
because they trust you. They feel good about doing business with you. They don’t
even care what you’re selling, but they trust that if you’re selling it, it’s
good enough to buy.
This is the best way to market.
Cool, but what does this have to do with Hollywood?
Well, attraction marketing is based upon success,
and Hollywood has some of the most successful people on earth. If you’re smart,
you’ll start paying attention to how successful people do things.
As a marketer, I’m always in learning mode. I
closely study what other marketers are doing in their businesses. So I take
lessons from a lot of different areas and perspectives.
But the funniest part is that I’ve learned more
about marketing from areas that aren’t even directly related to marketing –
like movies, actors and superstars.
Yep, I’ve learned more about marketing from Jim
Carrey, Jackie Chan and Will Smith than what you can imagine.
Bruce Lee movies are some of my favorites because
you can always find a message behind the message…
"Don't think, feel... It's like a finger
pointing at the moon."
Today I’m going to show you 3 of the best
attraction marketing lessons I’ve learned from Bruce Lee movies, so you can
start applying them in your business today.
So let’s get rolling!
1) Enter the dragon: “The art of fighting without
fighting”
In this movie, Bruce Lee teaches us a great lesson
about attraction marketing:
Basically, the drama of this movie is about a
world-wide martial arts contest on a secret Island. So here is Bruce Lee with a
dozen of martial artists in a boat going on to that island…
And there is a bully who starts to annoy a Chinese
child – that child had no kung fu skills at all. So the bully started to kick
him and push him so hard that the Chinese child falls frighteningly. So Bruce
realized that he needed to teach this bully a lesson…
(In order to make this easier to understand, I’ve
attached the dialogue here)
Anyway, so this bully comes to Bruce and he asks
him: “What’s your fighting style?”
Bruce responds: “You can call it the art of
fighting without fighting”
Bully: The art of fighting without fighting?
Show me some of it.
Bruce: Later.
[Bully grabs Bruce’s shoulder as he turns away]
Bruce: Don’t you think we need more room?
Bully: Where else?
Bruce: That island, on the beach. We can take
this boat.
So when the bully got into the boat, Bruce released
the rope that was holding that boat and the bully floated away, alone in the
medium of the ocean. Bruce stopped the fight before it started.
Yes, Bruce could fight and win the battle, but he
was smarter than that. Bruce taught him a lesson without even fight at all.
That’s the fine art of fighting without fighting!
Cool story, but what does this mean?
Well, in marketing we see something very similar…
Most people are the bully. They’re pushing their
audience. They apply such aggressive marketing that people feel uncomfortable
buying.
They seem desperate to sell, and they don’t
demonstrate their value…
…so people turn away.
But you don’t want to be the bully. You want to be
the smarter guy, don’t you?
So rather than pushing people out, you should start
pulling them in. You need to show them why you’re better than your competition.
How?
By demonstrating your value.
You need to give them something really valuable for
free – like a free sample, free webinar, free training, a powerful blog post,
and so on – so they can see how much you’re worth.
And I’m not talking about giving just “something”
for free. I’m talking about being smarter than 99.99% of marketers and give
away something that costs you.
For example, a complete training course, a
step-by-step guide, a free product or something proven. So people will think
“If he is giving away such amazing stuff for free, his paid stuff must be worth
much more!”
They will start buying your paid stuff even if you
aren’t directly selling it…
This is called “The art of marketing without
marketing.”
People will buy from you because you’ve helped them
solve their problems first.
People will buy your stuff because of your value.
2) Focus your energy on one single technique at a time
“I fear not the man who has practiced ten thousand
kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick ten thousand times” -Bruce
Lee
I still remember when I came across Internet
Marketing. There were a lot of “gurus” trying to push me out. Some of them told
me that free marketing strategies were the best way to run a successful
business online while others told me that paid strategies perform better.
There were a lot of different strategies to try
out, so I got information overload. I started to apply every strategy I came
across, but the reality is that I mastered none because my lack of focus.
I was trying to master all strategies and
techniques simultaneously – I started blogging, I created some paid advertising
campaigns, I even tried SEO – but I only lost my money.
And you know what?
All this because I tried to master all those
techniques at the same time – I was practicing 10,000 techniques once expecting
to have awesome results.
It wasn’t until I learned that it’s better focus
100% of your attention in one single technique that I started to see my
business grow.
The Harvard Business Review found that splitting
your energy into different things reduces your productivity and effectiveness.
So rather than practicing 10,000 techniques at the
same time, it’s much better practice one single technique 10,000 times until
you master it.
That way you’ll become an expert. People will start
to see you as an authority in your niche, and they will automatically feel
attracted to you.
3) Always be yourself
“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith
in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate
it” -Bruce Lee
Listen, people like people that are real.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of marketers out there that are trying to
duplicate success from others. And believe me, people are smart enough to know
when you’re trying to be someone that you aren’t.
Don’t be afraid to show your real personality.
It’s true that you won’t like all the people, and
it’s OK. There are a lot of different personalities out there. It’s impossible
to like everyone. The point here is to attract people like you, people who like
you. That way will be easier to build a connection with your audience.
They will start to identify with you, and will
therefore trust you.
For lack of a better word…
Attraction marketing is the art of captivating your
target audience to want to do business with you because of who you are.
But the million-dollar question is:
How do you attract people when you aren’t
successful yet?
There are a few simple ways to do it:
1) Borrow success from other people.
Talk about how other people have succeeded – In
other words, tell stories and create case studies based upon other people
success.
2) Don’t talk about your struggles until you’ve
passed through them
People don’t feel attracted to struggles; they feel
attracted to success. So if you don’t want to lose your audience, don’t talk
about your struggles until you’ve passed through them.
3) Learn, do and teach simultaneously
Apply what you learn, then immediately start to
teach it. Blog about it. That way you’ll learn even more, so you’ll become
better faster.
4) Don’t focus on money
Most people think that money is success – yes,
successful people have money – but there are different areas of success. Talk
about the areas where you’re successful right now.
How do I know that this stuff works?
It’s not only me saying this stuff, I’ve been
studying what successful people in this niche are doing – like Neil Patel,
Brian Dean, Francisco Rosales and Jeff Bullas – and I’ve found that all of them
are applying attraction marketing this way.
All of them have been following the process you’ve
learned today:
- Create a value-based business model
- Focus your energy, be specific
- Be yourself
Conclusion
When it comes to marketing – whether it’s
attraction marketing, email marketing, social media, and content marketing and
so on – you can steal ideas from every place.
Most people think they should only study boring papers,
books, interviews and even psychology to learn how to market. And it’s true,
you need to study those things, but you can also have fun and study your whole
environment.
I’m sure you’ll find gold nuggets from places
you’ve never imagined…like movies, stories, fable; you name it.
The most important thing is to be in learning mode.
