Five Ways To Have A More Independent Lifestyle

#Lifestyle

Hey,

It’s only natural to seek independence. No one wants to live under the control of another; every human is hardwired to seek our independence, to do what we please when we please. Yet the modern work environment has evolved to be almost the direct opposite of that goal.

We’re told where we must work, what we must do, how we must do it, for how long we must do it, and when (or if) we’re allowed to take breaks. This isn’t how it’s supposed to work; it’s not a pleasant process for anyone involved. But what can you do to make it better? No matter where you are, you aren’t powerless.

#1.Push Yourself And Then Let Yourself Take A Breather

Working constantly at a feverish pace doesn’t benefit anyone. Studies have proven that it doesn’t even benefit your employer: when you’re burned out you aren’t working to your full potential and you don’t produce the kind of quality that you otherwise would be capable of. Taking even a few minutes between projects to collect your thoughts makes it dramatically easier to refocus and start back, refreshed.

#2.Stake Out Break time

Most places will permit at least a little bit of time between the start and end of the day for smoke breaks. If you’re a smoker, you probably already take advantage of these. But if you aren’t, start taking them for yourself. Go into your break room. Go outside if you can. Time yourself and follow all the necessary procedures that one would need to follow if going to smoke. If you’re not sure what these are, ask. Consider encouraging others to join you. Some have had success creating walking groups or other group activities to encourage well-being.

#3.Take Your Whole Lunch

If you’re allotted an hour for lunch, time yourself and take the whole time. Don’t be rushed back to your desk before you’re ready. If you’re feeling inspired and want to get back to work that’s one thing, but if not take that time and do something that will enable you to refocus.

#4.Work From Home

Working from home is a fairly recent trend, but it’s been shown to benefit both employees and employers dramatically. Employers enjoy reduced costs because they’re not required to maintain the space that was formerly necessary, and employees avoid the stress of commutes and are able to work in an environment of increased comfort.

#5.Break With The 9-5 Mold Entirely

The ultimate way to become independent doesn’t involve compromising to make someone else schedule more palatable for you. It involves breaking away entirely and starting your own venture on your own terms. There are a lot of options here a tax preparation franchise, a totally new venture, some form of consulting. If you’re seriously considering it, start by thinking about what you’re good at. What can you build? If you’re unsure, it’s wise to select a franchise with a fairly low start up cost and good support from a corporate center.
